Callanan Industries is a leading supplier of paving materials and construction services in New York State, providing a complete range of high quality aggregates, asphalt paving, and readymix concrete products to state, federal, municipal, commercial, and private customers.

 

South Bethlehem Quarry, circa 1890One of the most experienced paving materials suppliers in the country, Callanan Industries was founded by Peter Callanan in 1883 in South Bethlehem, New York, as an aggregate mining company. A forward thinking farmer and entrepreneur, Callanan pioneered the concept of a state highway system, and in 1895 won the first road building contract let by New York State.

Over a century later, Callanan Industries continues to be a major supplier of construction materials and services to the New York State Department of Transportation as well as a long list of other customers, both large and small. Callanan Industries was purchased by Oldcastle, Inc. in 1985. Oldcastle, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the multi-national Dublin, Ireland based CRH-PLC (ticker symbol CRH).

Created in 1975, this nationally acclaimed program recognizes and rewards aggregate producers who have made constructive and positive efforts to enhance the aesthetic appearance of their quarry operations.  In 1987, the About Face Program received a "Special Merit Award" from the private sector-sponsored Keep America Beautiful Program, and in 1990 it was accorded the highest honor in the U.S. Department of Interior's Take Pride in America Program.  The Program is based on a twelve-point criteria with six categories of awards available.

Callanan received an honorable mention for our efforts to help preserve the habitat of the Karner Blue Butterfly at the Saratoga County Airport.

 

Sheldon G. Hayes Award for Highest Quality Asphalt Paving

1993 – Finalist in NAPA’s Sheldon G. Hayes Award for Highest Quality Asphalt Paving for I-787 Albany to Menands.

1994 – Finalist in NAPA’s Sheldon G. Hayes Award for Highest Quality Asphalt Paving for Route 32, Albany County.

The NAPA awards for Highest Quality Asphalt Paving are a result of a national competition. Callanan's achievement as a finalist, two years in succession, is a tribute to our commitment to quality and excellence in the industry.


Safety Awards

Callanan Industries, Inc. has built its safety program upon an aggressive training foundation, using a combination of in-house staff, consultants, the insurance company, and partnerships with various regulators. The result has been a better informed and educated1999 Safety Meeting workforce, capable of making solid decisions in an ever changing, fast paced field. The strong local and corporate commitment to the safety charge, supported by the parent company, CRH, and the holding company, Oldcastle, has created an exemplary safety record that is far above the average for the industry. With this corporate emphasis on safety, and our employees' commitment to a safe work environment, Callanan has earned a number of safety awards including:

The National Stone Associations 1996 Sterling Award in the large company category (over 500,000 hours). This award, the NSA's most prestigious, recognizes the aggregate company with the best safety rates.

The Associated General Contractors of America's Certificate of Commendation for Safety Excellence.

Callanan Industries, Inc. is a regular winner of Liberty Mutual’s Excellence Award. This award is presented to a Liberty Mutual policyholder and its employees in recognition of excellent accident prevention results over a four year period.

Callanan had been an annual winner of Liberty Mutual’s Gold Award, which is the prerequisite award to the Excellence Award.

Clemente Latham Concrete’s Troy and Glens Falls locations won the 1998 National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Excellence in Safety Award. Gloversville, Latham, and Wynantskill plants are all winners in the NRMCA’s 1998 Accident Free Year Award.
